[브레이크뉴스경기남부=수원 오경희기자] 임태희 경기도교육감이 2월 28일(현지 시각) 대한민국 교육감 최초인 하버드대 특별 강연 일정을 모두 마치고 귀국길에 올랐다.

지난 25일부터 28일까지의 미국 보스턴 일정은 경기교육 변혁의 길을 세계에 공유함으로써 미래교육을 선도하는 경기교육의 국제적 위상을 재확인하며 미국 내 교육관계자는 물론 한인 동포 사회에도 의미 있는 시간의 행보였다고 교육청은 전했다.

임 교육감은 첫 일정으로 지난 25일 오후 미국 매사추세츠주 하버드대학교 리먼 홀(LEHMAN Hall)에서 하버드대·MIT 한인 학생 20여 명과 간담회를 열고, 학교·경기공유학교·경기온라인학교가 유기적으로 이어지는 새로운 경기교육 시스템을 소개했다.

이 자리에서 한인 학생들은 각자의 생각과 경험담을 이야기하며 경기공유학교와 경기온라인학교에 대한 기대감을 나타냈다. 임 교육감이 추진하고 있는 한국의 대학입시 제도 개혁에 대해서도 미래 인재가 세계적 경쟁력을 갖추기 위해서는 꼭 필요한 과정이라고 강조했다. 또한 스스로 문제를 찾고 해결하는 ‘자기 주도적 문제 해결 능력’이 앞으로 교육의 역할이라고 입을 모았다.

다음 날인 지난 26일 오후 임 교육감은 대한민국 교육감 최초로 하버드대학교 강단에 올라 하버드대 학생과 교수, 학교 관계자 등 150여 명을 대상으로 ‘한국(경기도)의 교육개혁: 학생 맞춤형 교육과 인공지능의 역할’을 주제로 특강을 했다.

임 교육감의 하버드대 특강은 지난해 12월 경기도교육청이 유네스코, 교육부 등과 공동 개최한 ‘2024 유네스코 교육의 미래 국제포럼’에 참여했던 페르난도 레이머스 하버드대 교육대학원(HGSE: Havard Graduate School of Education) 교수의 초청으로 이뤄졌다.

임 교육감은 간담회에 앞서 미국 매사추세츠주 벨몬트 고등학교를 방문해 질 가이저 벨몬트 교육감, 아이작 테일러 교장 등과 면담하고, 학교시설의 지역사회 공유 사례를 확인했다. 또한 학생의 관심과 적성에 따라 자율적으로 수업을 선택해 수강하는 벨몬트고 수업을 참관한 뒤 경기교육도 사고력과 창의력, 문제해결력을 제대로 평가하는 방향으로 대학입시제도 개편에 노력을 기울이고 있다고 설명했다.
