(사)로터스월드(이사장 성관 스님)가 주최한 이날 행사는 문화교류 한마당(태권도 시범·국악·트로트 공연), 교류·협력 사진전 등으로 진행됐다.

개회식에서 축사를 한 이재준 수원시장은 “로터스월드의 20년은 수원시가 캄보디아 시엠립주와 함께한 20년이기도 하다”며 “로터스월드가 앞으로도 수원시의 변함없는 동반자가 돼 주길 바란다”고 말했다.

이어 “먼 나라의 가난한 이웃을 위해 봉사하고, 후원해 주신 활동가·후원자·직원들에게 감사드린다”고 말했다.

2004년 7월 캄보디아 시엠립주와 국제자매도시결연을 체결한 수원시는 빈민 지역이었던 프놈끄라옴 마을을 지원하기로 하고, 2007년 1월 ‘수원마을 조성 계획’을 수립했다.

수원시와 로터스월드와 본격적인 협력은 2012년 시작됐다. 수원시와 로터스월드는 프놈끄라옴 수원마을의 마을개발 2단계 사업을 앞두고 업무협약을 체결했고, 이후 10여 년 동안 협력을 이어가고 있다.
