[브레이크뉴스경기남부=용인 이귀선기자] 용인특례시(시장 이상일)는 ‘2023 소비자가 선호하는 유아아동&시니어 브랜드 대상’에서 이상일 용인시장이 아동정책 부문 대상을 수상했다고 21일 밝혔다.

 

용인특례시에 따르면 교육이 용인의 미래를 책임질 원동력이라는 믿음으로 각급 학교 설립과 미래인재 양성을 위해 보다 나은 교육환경을 만들려는 이 시장의 적극적인 행보가 단연 돋보였다는 평이다.

 

소비자가 선호하는 유아아동&시니어 브랜드 대상은 관련 산업 경쟁력을 평가하고, 소비자들에게 올바른 기준을 제시하기 위해 헤럴드경제와 코리아헤럴드가 주최하고 월간 파워코리아가 주관한다.

 

이 시장은 지난해 6월 민선8기 용인특례시장으로 당선된 직후 시장직인수위원회 내 교육인프라 TF를 만들어 교육 인프라를 확충하는 방안을 가다듬었다.

 

기흥역세권 중학교 설립, 반도체고등학교 설립, 고림동 고유초‧중, 영덕동 기흥1중, 모현읍 왕산2초‧중 통합학교(이상 가칭)등 20개에 가까운 학교설립방안을 검토하고 추진해 왔다.

 

취임 직후에는 직접 장상윤 교육부 차관을 찾아가 시대변화에 따른 학교설립 기준 변경의 필요성을 설명하고 개선을 건의해 ‘지방교육행정기관 재정투자사업 심사규칙’ 개정을 이끌어 냈다. 이를 통해 기흥역세권 중학교 신설에 청신호가 켜졌다.

 

이와 함께 지난해 12월부터 지역 초등학교 교장들과 직접 만나 간담회를 열어 학교 현장의 어려움을 듣고 해법을 제시하는 등 적극적인 소통 행보를 보여왔다. 올해는 관내 103개 초등학교 중 3분의 2에 해당하는 73개 학교 교장들과 만나 직접 대화하는 자리를 가졌다.

 

이들 학교에선 통학시간 횡단보도 신호 조정, 원형육교 설치, 하천변 보행로 마련과 교량 설치 등을 토로했으며 이 시장은 직접 현장에 나가 문제를 살피며 해결 방안을 제시하기도 했다.

 

시는 지난 2020년 유니세프 아동친화도시로 인증받은 이후 아동의 정책 참여와 권리보호를 위해 앞장서 왔다.

 

시는 아동참여위원회 구성을 비롯해 어린이 안전CCTV 구축, 꿈이룸 안전 체험교실 등에 259억원을 투입해 어린이가 안전하고 행복한 도시 환경을 구축, 제101회 어린이날 기념 정부포상에서 ‘아동친화 환경조성’ 부문 보건복지부 장관상을 수상하기도 했다.

 

이상일 용인특례시장은 “용인의 미래를 이끌어갈 우리 아이들에게 더 나은 교육환경을 만들어주겠다는 일념으로 열심히 일해왔는데, 그런 점에서 좋은 평가를 해주시고 상도 주신 것 같다”며 “아직 부족한 부분들도 있고 풀어야 할 숙제도 많은데 더 힘내서 일하라는 의미로 알고 용인의 교육 인프라 확충을 위해 노력하겠다”고 말했다.

 

한편, 이상일 용인특례시장은 지난달 27일 (사)한국크리에이터진흥협회와 진코리아미디어그룹이 주최하고 평판커뮤니케이션연구소와 한국시민기자협회 등 100여 개의 시민사회단체가 공동 주관한 ’대한민국 평판대상‘에서 자치단체장 부문 수상자로 이름을 올리기도 했다.

 

대한민국 평판대상은 매년 국가 및 지역사회 발전을 위해 책임을 다하는 국회의원, 지방자치단체장, 광역 및 기초의원, 국가기관, 사회단체 문화예술인을 선정해 시상하는 상이다. 올해 시상위원장은 성낙인 전 서울대학교 총장이 맡았다.
