[Break News Gyeonggi Nambu = Reporter Kim Jeong-eun] The smiles of Suwon citizens are spreading along the narrow-gauge railroad where 'Little Train' ran. This is thanks to the fact that the upper space is freely used by citizens as a walking trail as the Suwon-si section of the Suin Line section that was fully opened for the first time in 25 years last year became underground. On September 12, 2020, one year before the opening of the Suin Line Suwon section, let's check the convenient transportation of West Suwon and the upper space of the Suin Line.

A waterline that runs with the history of transportation

The Suin Line linking Suwon and Incheon is a train that ran along the trajectory of history. The Suin Line was created to transport rice produced in the eastern part of Gyeonggi Province and salt made from the salt fields of Gyeonggi Bay to Japan during the Japanese colonial period, when the invasion was severe. It is a narrow gauge line with a narrower orbit spacing than the standard, and it started with 17 stations in a total section of 52 km. In the early days, it mainly transported cargo, but gradually the passenger function increased and it became the main means of exchange between Suwon-Hwaseong-Ansan-Siheung-Incheon, earning the nickname 'Little Train'.

Suin-seon stood at a crossroads in its existence due to rapid urban development in the 1970s. While the road network was being expanded, the industrial road between Suwon and Incheon was opened in 1977 and the freight transport function shifted to road traffic. In the end, cargo transportation was stopped from September 1977, and after taking only limited passenger transportation, the Suin Line finally stopped between Handaemae and Suwon on December 31, 1995. It was opened 58 years ago.

Since then, the Suin Line, which was promoted as a general train as a double-track railway construction project, is again connecting the southwestern part of the metropolitan area with a step-by-step opening. The Suin Line will open sequentially in the order of ▲ Phase 1, Oido to Songdo on June 30, 2012, Songdo to Incheon, on February 27, 2016, and Suwon to Handae, on September 12, 2020. revived

Convenient Seosuwon, including Omokcheon Station and Gosaek Station

The Suin-Bundang Line, which started operating on September 12 last year, has dramatically improved the transportation convenience of Suwon citizens.

First of all, it is directly connected to the Bundang Line, creating a new route for citizens to go to Incheon via Ansan and Siheung, or to Seoul via Yongin and Seongnam. Before the opening, it took 90 minutes to get from Suwon to Incheon, but the Suin Line drastically shortens this to 70 minutes.

In particular, Gosaek Station and Omokcheon Station were newly built in the Suwon section of the Suin Line to enhance transportation convenience for residents of the Seosuwon area, who were excluded from using the railroad. It took 40 minutes to transfer to a bus from near Omokcheon Station, the border area of Suwon City, to Suwon City Hall, the center of Suwon City. If you time it right, you can save up to 30 minutes.

The Suin Line, which improved transportation convenience in the West Suwon area, was loved by the citizens and the number of passengers increased significantly.

First of all, Gosaek Station, named after a village called ‘Gosaekgol’, has an accumulated number of passengers getting on and off the bus for 11 months from the opening to the end of July, thanks to the express trains stopping at 1.76 million. In the first year of 2020, the daily average of 4438 (2240 boarding, 2198 alighting) passengers increased significantly to 5998 (3046 boarding, 2952 alighting) this year. It helps Suwon Deltaplex workers located nearby to commute to work conveniently.

Omokcheon Station, the last station on the Suin-Bundang Line Suwon section, was counted as being used by 1.29 million people during the same period. The daily average number of passengers is increasing by about 20% from an average of 3562 passengers in 2020 (1860 boarding, 1702 alighting) to 4226 (2192 boarding, 2034 alighting) this year. It was a bit inconvenient to use public transportation outside of Suwon, but with the creation of the Suin Line, the convenience of students from nearby middle and high schools and universities has increased.

A citizen who used Gosaek Station said, “Thanks to the Suin Line, it has become much more convenient to go to the nearest Suwon Station, and there are many stations where you can transfer to other lines, making it easy to move to other areas, so I use it often.”

The upper space of the Suin Line underground becomes a shelter for residents

The Suin Line Suwon section has a special meaning in that it provides not only convenience of movement but also a nature-friendly resting space to the residents of the West Suwon area.

Initially, the Suin Line Suwon section was planned as an overground rail that utilizes the old Suin Line section as it is. Citizens feared that if a railroad track was laid on the ground and a train was running, the two areas between the railroad tracks would inevitably be cut off and the environment would deteriorate, including noise.

In response, Suwon City actively collected the opinions of residents and promoted the undergroundization of the Suin Line Suwon-si section. In the process, Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young made the decision to invest 19 billion won in the city budget.

Thanks to this, in the upper space of the Suin Line Suwon section underground, there was a ‘Railway’ instead of a ‘Railway’. The upper space of the Suin Line built underground was returned to the residents through the park. The 3.5km section from Gosaek-dong to Omokcheon-dong is connected for a long time, becoming the ‘Suin Line Sky Forest Trail’ where you can enjoy a walk without being interrupted in a linear fashion. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, but it is still possible for citizens to use it for a walk.

The Suin-seon Sky Forest Trail reproduces a forest road in the city center by planting various species of trees such as Japanese poplar, Yoshino cherry, giant oak, zelkova, metasequoia, and silver grass. It is a place where you can create a unique landscape by using an old railroad track, and the tranquil scenery added to each place will put your mind at ease. Rest areas and small plazas have been prepared throughout the promenade, and bicycle paths are well connected, so that any citizen can build memories in a space that used to be a railroad track.

A resident who spent time with his children in the upper plaza of Gosaek Station said, “It was a pity that there were not many spaces for children to run around to their heart’s content. “The satisfaction of living in the upper part of the Suin Line has been increased,” he said.

Suwon City's efforts for the convenience of residents will continue.

The city of Suwon turned the space above the Suin Line into a park and added various considerations to make it convenient for citizens to use it, such as installing additional convenience facilities for residents.

A typical example is a narrow gauge tunnel. The 189m long narrow-gauge tunnel through which the Suin Line passed is located on the border between Suwon and Hwaseong. As the only narrow gauge tunnel that exists in Korea, both cities have been reborn as pedestrian tunnels where citizens can come and go, paying attention to the high value of conservation and utilization. It is also worth noting that the boundary between Suwon City and Hwaseong City is marked inside the tunnel, making use of convenience and historicity.

In addition, Suwon City is creating a path that can be walked continuously by installing three-dimensional pedestrian facilities in the section of the Suin Line Haneul Forest Trail that is cut off by roads and rivers. This is to make it more convenient for citizens to use the bridge by installing a bridge on the road cut off by the section of Hwanggujicheon and West Road.

By creating an additional passageway connecting the transfer parking lot installed at Omokcheon Station to the station, the construction was completed so that when residents in nearby areas came to transfer to the subway by car, they would not go outside and would be connected underground. When the transfer parking lot is opened in the future, transfer passengers can use the Suin Line more conveniently.

In addition, the trickle triangle bike path, which was previously installed using the trickle triangle that was decommissioned in 2018, was also connected to the Suin Line Sky Forest Road.

In particular, in Gosaek Station, where three entrances are currently installed, an additional exit 4 is being installed. If an additional entrance is built across Maesonggosaek-ro, it is expected that nearby residents as well as students attending nearby schools will be able to use the Suin Line and Haneul Forest Road more safely and conveniently. The additional entrance to be installed after three years of persistent effort is expected to be completed next year.

Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young said, “We will finish the Sky Forest Trail, which was created as a park for the upper part of the Suin Line Suwon section, so that it can become a haven for citizens. It is expected that more citizens will be more comfortable with this,” he said.
